With shallow screw grooves and thin material layers, 3-flighted screw elements deliver higher average shear rate and shear force to raw materials at the same screw rotational speed. Compared with 2-flighted types, the 3-flighted design performs better in heat transfer, greatly facilitating plasticization and melting of raw materials.

However, due to its strong shear force, 3-flighted screw elements are generally not recommended for shear-sensitive materials, such as glass fiber reinforced materials, PVC and other similar media.
